Why the word "agentic" has lost meaning

Every SaaS product with a retry loop now markets itself as agentic; here's why only a conjunctive capability threshold can do the discriminating work the word stopped doing.

The word "agentic" used to mean something. In 2026, it means almost nothing.

That's the claim, and I'll defend it. But the short version is what you already see. Every SaaS product with a retry loop now markets itself as agentic. Every newsletter calls every chatbot an agent. Every vendor briefing leads with "agentic AI" the way 2017 briefings led with "AI-powered." When a word is applied to everything in a category, the word stops describing anything inside the category; it becomes a synonym for the category itself, which is to say it becomes a synonym for "software."

This site exists to fix that. The fix is a conjunctive capability threshold called agentic complete, and the rest of this post is why nothing short of a conjunctive threshold will do the work, and why the work needs doing.

What broke?

A word's job is to draw a line. "Agentic" used to draw a line between systems that hold a goal across steps and systems that respond to a prompt and stop. The line was useful because the two architectures behave differently, ship at different times, and fail in different ways. Anyone wiring up a planner-executor loop in 2022 wanted a word for what they had that a chatbot didn't. "Agentic" was that word.

The line went fuzzy as the architecture trickled down. A workflow tool that called a language model inside one of its nodes added "agentic" to its marketing page. A chatbot that could invoke a single tool added an "agentic mode." A document editor with a "fix this paragraph" button announced "agentic editing." Each of these is defensible in a narrow technical sense; yes, the system is doing something on the user's behalf. None of them is defensible in the discriminating sense the word originally served, because none of them is doing the thing that made "agentic" useful to begin with.

So what specifically did the word used to mean? My read is this. It meant a system that held a goal state across more than one model call, planned a sequence of actions, executed those actions against an environment that could change, monitored what happened, and adapted in response. Five things bundled together. The bundle is the architecture. The word for the bundle is "agent." The adjective for software exhibiting the bundle is "agentic."

The corrosion happened because each of those five properties can be claimed in isolation. A tool-calling chatbot holds no goal state but executes a tool. A retrieval pipeline plans a query but doesn't adapt. A workflow with a model in one node has a planner of sorts, but the planner is the human who authored the graph. Each individual property looks agentic to someone who hasn't seen the whole bundle, and so each one gets the word.

Why this word?

Most technical words eventually drift. "Cloud" used to mean something specific; now it means "any computer you don't own." "AI" used to mean expert systems and search algorithms; now it means whatever a company wants to charge a premium for. "Agentic" is in worse shape than either, for a simple reason: it sits in the marketing window of the largest enterprise software wave in a decade. The drift is faster because the incentive to drift is bigger.

There's a more specific reason too. "Agentic" describes a capability claim, not a technology claim. A vendor can say "our product uses transformers" and the listener can verify by reading the model card. A vendor can say "our product is agentic" and the listener has nowhere to verify, because there is no agreed test. With no test, the word's only constraint is whether the marketing copy reads well. The marketing copy always reads well.

The framework pages of this site exist to give the word a test. The Maturity Model gives ordinal levels. The Evaluation Framework gives six capability domains. Together they specify what a system has to demonstrate to clear each band. Agentic complete, Level 5, is the conjunctive band: all six capability domains satisfied, no architectural handoffs, durable across the bounded scope. The test is observable from the outside. You don't need the vendor's permission to apply it.

Why conjunctive?

The threshold has to be conjunctive because anything weaker is gameable. Pick any single capability domain and you can find a system in 2026 that does well on that one and fails on the others. Tool use is widespread; goal persistence is rare. Planning is widespread; adaptation is rare. Monitoring is occasionally present; completion determination is almost never solved. A disjunctive threshold — "agentic means one or more of these capabilities" — passes nearly every product on the market. A conjunctive threshold passes a much shorter list, and the shorter list is the point.

I argued the same point from a different angle in classifying ten popular AI systems. Eight of the ten landed at Level 3. That clustering is the diagnostic. If eight of the ten most prominent agents in the market sit in the same partial-agency band, the word "agentic" isn't naming a capability; it's naming a market segment. Conjunctive was always the corrective. Disjunctive lets the market segment keep the word.

What works?

A conjunctive threshold does three things a softer definition can't.

It raises the cost of the claim. To say a system is agentic complete, a vendor has to defend it against six axes simultaneously. Disjunctive claims like "agentic-ish" or "agentic on Tuesdays" get rejected by structure, not by judgment. Many vendors won't make the claim once it's expensive. That's the point.

It makes the placements public. If I claim a system is at Level 3, I have to say which evaluation domain it fails on. If a vendor claims Level 4, the same. The argument has somewhere to go. The argument under the current usage of "agentic" goes nowhere; both sides nod and move on, having agreed on a word that means nothing in common.

It lets honest systems stand out. A team that ships a Level 3 can describe it as Level 3 and lose nothing, because Level 3 is real partial agency and useful for a vast number of tasks. The team that's currently marketing its Level 3 as "agentic AI" loses the option to say what it actually shipped, because the word has been spent. Honesty becomes available again only when the word is reclaimed.

Perfect?

The threshold isn't perfect. There are edge cases. Systems that operate at Level 5 within one domain and Level 3 within another. Systems whose level shifts based on configuration. Systems that satisfy five of the six domains by a wide margin and the sixth by a hair. The Maturity Model handles these by being explicit that placements are scope-bounded: a system is agentic complete within a defined domain, not absolutely. The Evaluation Framework handles them by naming each capability individually, so the failure modes are visible rather than glossed.

There's a fairer objection too: language drifts, "agentic" is going to keep drifting whether or not this site names a threshold, and we'll just spend our energy fighting a losing rear-guard action. I take the objection seriously. My answer is that the conjunctive threshold isn't a rear-guard action on the word; it's a forward action on a new piece of vocabulary. "Agentic complete" is a compound term, not a reclamation of "agentic" itself. The site cedes "agentic" to the marketing-flavored usage that's already winning, and pulls the discriminating work into a phrase that's specifically defined and harder to dilute.

That choice matters. The word "cloud" wasn't reclaimed by purists; it was orbited by harder words like "edge," "serverless," and "multi-tenant" that did the discriminating work the older word couldn't anymore. "Agentic complete" is meant to be one of those orbital terms for the agentic wave.

Who loses?

Vendors that currently use "agentic" to mean "we have a language model in our product somewhere" lose the option to keep doing it without contradiction. They don't lose the option to keep doing it. There is no enforcement here; this is a site, not a standards body. A vendor that wants to call its retry loop agentic will keep calling its retry loop agentic. What changes is that there's now a public, citable definition the reader can apply, and a public framework the vendor's own marketing can be measured against. The reader has a tool the reader didn't have before.

That's the whole strategy of the experiment. Reclaim ground a paragraph at a time. The site doesn't need every vendor to agree; it needs the readers who care to have somewhere to point.

Now what?

A short list of what changes if the conjunctive threshold takes hold.

If you operate a system, classify it. The framework is small enough to fit in a paragraph and clear enough to actually decide. Most systems land at Level 3. That isn't an insult; it's where the engineering frontier is. Calling a Level 3 a Level 3 makes the next year of work legible to your team and to your customers.

If you write about systems, use the levels. "Level 3 with strong partial agency" is more informative than "agentic." The vocabulary is available; the cost of using it is one extra sentence per piece.

If you buy systems, ask the vendor for the placement and the trace. A vendor that can't say where the gates are is selling marketing. A vendor that can is selling a system. The diagnostic is cheap; the trace test is the version I'd use first.

If you're a vendor, pick the band you actually ship and own it. The honest pitch outsells the dishonest pitch the moment the reader has a framework to read both against. Level 3 systems are valuable. Marketing them as Level 4 is what hollows out the term you'd like to use later when you do ship a 4.

Ready?

The word "agentic" is not coming back to what it meant in 2022. That's fine. What needs to come back is the ability to tell, in public, whether a system is partial automation pretending to be full automation, or full automation pretending to be modest. The conjunctive threshold lets us tell. The rest is a habit.

Pick the next time a vendor calls a system agentic. Look at the trace. Count the gates. Read the documentation for what happens when a tool call fails. Find the place where execution authority transfers, and notice who's holding it. That's the whole exercise. If the system is doing the thing the word used to mean, fine. If it isn't, you've just found the place the word stopped working.

The threshold isn't going to enforce itself. Use it.
